Summary

The Emotional Detox & Grief Release Retreat is Ushmaya's most tender and carefully held programme — a 5-night sanctuary for those carrying the weight of unprocessed grief, heartbreak, loss, or emotional exhaustion. This is not about fixing or rushing through pain. It is about creating a safe, compassionate container where emotions can surface, be witnessed, and be gently released. Through trauma-sensitive yoga, guided breathwork, somatic body therapy, Ayurvedic healing treatments, and sacred ritual by the Ganges, this retreat supports the body and heart in doing what they already know how to do — heal. Facilitated by practitioners trained in trauma-informed care, every element is designed to honour your pace and your process.

The Retreat Experience

Your retreat begins with a private, unhurried intake conversation with your lead facilitator — a space to share as much or as little as you wish about what you are carrying. There is no agenda and no pressure. Each morning opens with trauma-sensitive yoga — slow, choice-based movement where you are always invited, never instructed, to explore what feels safe in your body. After a gentle breakfast, the mid-morning brings your somatic therapy session — one-on-one bodywork with a trained somatic practitioner who helps you locate and release stored emotional tension through gentle touch, breath, and movement. Afternoons offer guided breathwork sessions specifically designed for emotional release — supported by the group and facilitated with deep care. These sessions can be profoundly cathartic, and our team is trained to hold whatever emerges with unconditional compassion. Late afternoons bring sacred ritual by the Ganges — offerings to the river, candle ceremonies, and the ancient practice of releasing what no longer serves you to the flowing water. Evenings offer restorative practices, warm Ayurvedic meals, and the option of one-on-one support. The retreat closes with a ceremony of renewal — setting intentions for the life you are growing into.

What Makes This Retreat Special

Grief and emotional pain live in the body, not just the mind — and they cannot be talked away. This retreat works with the body directly through somatic therapy, breathwork, and trauma-sensitive movement. Our facilitators are trained in trauma-informed care and bring decades of experience in holding people through their most vulnerable moments. The sacred geography of Rishikesh adds a dimension that is difficult to describe — the Ganges has been a place of release and renewal for thousands of years, and many guests find that performing ritual by the river creates a turning point in their healing. The group is kept intentionally small (maximum 6) to ensure the deepest possible safety and individual attention.

Ayurvedic Cuisine

Meals during the Emotional Detox retreat are designed to comfort, ground, and stabilise — recognising that grief and emotional processing place real demands on the body. Our Ayurvedic kitchen prepares warm, easily digestible foods that feel like nourishment for the soul. Breakfasts offer warm porridge with ghee and cinnamon, stewed fruits, herbal teas, and gentle preparations that ease the body into the day. Lunches are grounding and substantial — kitchari, root vegetables, whole grains, and nourishing broths. Dinners are intentionally light and soothing — mung dal soup, soft chapati, steamed vegetables, and calming herbal infusions with ashwagandha and brahmi. Comfort is prioritised alongside nutrition — if you need an extra bowl of kheer or a warm cup of milk with saffron and nutmeg, it is always available. All meals are free from stimulants, processed ingredients, and inflammatory foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this retreat suitable for recent or acute grief?+

Yes. This retreat is designed to hold people at all stages of grief — whether your loss is recent or decades old. Our facilitators are trained in trauma-informed care and will meet you exactly where you are. If you are in crisis, we recommend speaking with a mental health professional alongside attending.

Will I be expected to share my story with the group?+

Never. All sharing is entirely voluntary. Some guests find comfort in sharing; others prefer to process privately. Both approaches are equally honoured. The breathwork and somatic sessions work directly with the body, so verbal sharing is not required for healing to occur.

What is somatic body therapy?+

Somatic therapy is a gentle, body-centred approach to releasing stored emotional tension. Your practitioner uses light touch, guided awareness, and breath to help your body release patterns of holding that accumulate around grief, trauma, and stress. Sessions are always conducted with full consent and at your pace.

Is this a substitute for professional therapy?+

No. While this retreat can be profoundly healing, it is a wellness programme, not psychotherapy. It works beautifully alongside professional support and many guests attend during or after a period of therapy. If you are currently in crisis, please consult your mental health professional before booking.

What if I feel overwhelmed during the retreat?+

Our facilitators are trained to support emotional intensity with skill and compassion. You always have the choice to step back from any activity, take private time, or request a one-on-one support session. Your safety and comfort are the foundation of everything we do.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Free cancellation up to 10 days before your check-in date for a full refund. Cancellations within 10 days receive a 50% refund or the option to reschedule. We understand that circumstances change, especially during difficult times, and we handle every request with compassion.
