Summary

The Nature Immersion & Forest Bathing Retreat is Ushmaya's invitation to remember what modern life has made us forget — that we are part of the natural world, and that nature itself is one of the most powerful healers available to us. Over 5 unhurried days, this retreat guides you through the Japanese-inspired practice of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), barefoot earthing, riverside yoga, bird listening meditations, herbal garden immersions, and slow, sensory-rich walks through the forests and trails surrounding Rishikesh. Ideal for urban professionals, nature lovers, and eco-conscious travellers seeking genuine reconnection with the earth.

The Retreat Experience

Each morning begins with barefoot earthing on the dewy grass of Ushmaya's gardens — standing in stillness, feeling the cool earth beneath your feet as the Himalayan foothills emerge from morning mist. After gentle riverside yoga and a wholesome breakfast, you set out on guided forest bathing walks through the Sal and Teak forests along the Ganges. These are not hikes — they are slow, meditative journeys where your guide invites you to engage each sense: touching bark, smelling wild herbs, listening to birdsong, watching light filter through the canopy. Afternoons bring herbal garden tours where you learn to identify medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic preparations, followed by nature journaling or creative nature art. Late afternoons offer bird listening meditations by the river — sitting in complete stillness as the soundscape of the forest washes over you. Evenings bring stargazing sessions on the terrace, guided nature reflections, and early rest. By the third day, guests describe a palpable shift — a slowing of the internal clock, a heightened sensitivity to beauty, and a feeling of being held by the living world.

What Makes This Retreat Special

Rishikesh sits at the confluence of the Himalayas and the Ganges — one of the most biodiverse and energetically rich landscapes in India. The forests surrounding Ushmaya are home to over 200 species of birds, ancient Sal trees, and medicinal plants used in Ayurveda for centuries. Our nature guides are trained forest therapy practitioners who bring both scientific understanding and deep reverence for the natural world. Unlike adventure retreats, this programme prioritises slowness and sensory depth — allowing nature to do the healing rather than treating it as a backdrop for activity. The retreat is intentionally seasonal (October to March) to coincide with the best weather, clearest skies, and most active wildlife.

Ayurvedic Cuisine

Meals during the Nature Immersion retreat celebrate the connection between earth and nourishment. Our kitchen sources ingredients from local organic farms and our own herbal garden — many of the herbs you encounter on your garden tour will appear on your plate. Breakfasts feature fresh fruits, herbal teas brewed from garden-picked herbs, warm porridge, and seasonal preparations. Lunches are the day's main meal — fresh vegetable dishes, dal, whole grains, and salads dressed with garden herbs. Dinners are light and warming — soups made from foraged greens, millet preparations, and soothing infusions. All meals are vegetarian, organic, and free from processed ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions

How physically demanding are the forest walks?+

Not at all. Forest bathing is the opposite of hiking — it is slow, gentle, and meditative. We walk at a pace that allows full sensory immersion. The trails are mostly flat and accessible. If you can walk comfortably for 30 minutes, you will enjoy this retreat.

What if it rains?+

Light rain can actually enhance the forest bathing experience — the scents of the forest intensify and the soundscape becomes richer. We provide rain-appropriate gear. In the event of heavy rain, activities are adapted to covered outdoor spaces and indoor nature practices.

Why is this retreat seasonal?+

October to March offers the best conditions for outdoor immersion in Rishikesh — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and the most active wildlife and birdlife. The monsoon months (July–September) make forest trails less accessible and comfortable.

Can children attend?+

This retreat is designed for adults (18+) to maintain the meditative depth and quietude of the experience. We are happy to recommend family-friendly nature experiences separately.

Is Wi-Fi available?+

Yes, but we strongly encourage a full digital detox to maximise your immersion in nature. Many guests choose to hand in their devices on arrival and find this to be one of the most liberating aspects of the retreat.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Free cancellation up to 7 days before your check-in date for a full refund. Cancellations within 7 days receive a 50% refund or the option to reschedule.
